Weird and wonderful perfume ingredients

Perfumes have been around for thousands of years and are far more complicated than we can imagine. Not only do many scents which smell seemingly “normal” have bizarre ingredients, but our perception of those notes is also something we don’t consciously correlate with the odd sources they come from.

So, if you want to know more, read on...

Did you know that synthetic Jasmine notes are derived from coal tar? The real flowers are delicate and expensive to hydro distil, and therefore many synthetic perfumes contain the coal tar extract.

Fresh lilies have notes which smell like ham! The lilies we use are made from hydro distilled Lily of the Valley we import from England. They smell fabulous.

Musk is derived from the musk deer that is killed for his glands, but we use "musk" derived from botanicals like Patchouli, Hybiscus, Vanilla, Clove bud and Rose.

Roses are the Queens of the perfume world, and have been the choice ingredient in most popular fragrances, did you know that roses have hundreds of scent molecules combining beautiful notes of different aromas like a classical symphony. We source our rose absolute (extract from rose petals) from only the best quality organic Rose Otto plantations.

They contain a combination of rose oxide, which is metallic, geranyl acetate which is fruity-floral, citronellol, which is also present in lemongrass and neroli. Phenyl acetate, which lends chocolate accords its sweetness, is also used in rose accords.

It is no wonder we love roses so much!!

Liquid from the anal glands of civits is a popular perfume ingredient. We only use botanicals, and our perfumes are vegan.

There is a Chanel perfume with extracts from beavers' abdominal glands.

Hyraceum (Dassiepis see image of a Dassie) , is a perfume ingredient that is derived from the feaces of a small rodent and is still used by niche perfume houses.

There is a perfume (not one of ours!) which combined the smell of blood, spit, sweat and semen. It starts with a T.....

There are barbeque and bacon-inspired fragrances out there!!!

We hope you enjoyed this newsletter-
